Environmental benefits of Organic cotton

Buds of fluffy organic cotton grow in huge fields of cotton plantations around the world

When I was researching which fabric I wanted to print my designs on to, I looked at a whole range of textiles. In the past I might have considered silk, however since becoming vegan I wanted to be as insect friendly as possible as well. I’ve learned so much about the benefits of organic cotton as opposed to conventional cotton. The reason it feels so much softer and more luxurious is that chemicals and toxins haven’t been used in the production process, so the fibres remain long and undamaged and this is why the fabric lasts longer too. Surprisingly organic cotton uses around 80% less water to produce than conventional cotton making it far more sustainable and better for the environment. By not using toxins it is a far better environment for workers, insects and biodiversity too.

I found this wonderful YouTube video from Hubub in collaboration with The Soil Association which explains a lot more about all the good things organic cotton has to offer, and wanted to share it with you.

I’m also interested in where the fabric is sourced so here is a list of where the printers I use source their fabric from:
Cushion covers - used on the front and printed with my designs, the organic cotton is sourced from China. For the back of my cushion covers, the unbleached organic cotton is sourced from Spain.
Scarves - printed with my designs, the organic cotton is grown and produced in China.
Tea towels - printed with my cutlery design, the organic cotton is sourced from India.
Cutlery bags - printed with my cutlery design, the organic cotton is sourced from China. The backs of my cutlery bags are made from surplus cotton I have which would otherwise be thrown away.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on organic cotton and what you love about it most? Do let me know in the comments below.
