Inspiring places: Meadfoot Beach

Meadfoot Beach Torquay is an inspiration to Nicola and her Inkwell Designs collection

Meadfoot Beach, Torquay

I feel fortunate to have grown up in Torquay, it’s a beautiful part of the world and somewhere I continue to spend a lot of time. There are many local beaches which are very close to my heart, they are my happy place to be, and I’ll include more beaches in future posts. The colour of the sea at Meadfoot Beach was the inspiration for my Sea Blue tea towel. This beach is just down the road through a pretty valley from Kents Cavern where Prehistoric fellow Torquinians lived in caves around 500 thousand years ago. With a little imagination it’s easy to think about our predecessors spending time on this beautiful beach as well, though it might have had a path rather than the road running alongside it at the time. There’s a great little cafe here too where you can get a tea and a bite to eat, it overlooks the beach and is positioned next to the row of beach huts. I particularly love this beach out of season when it’s quiet and it’s possible to stroll along the sand, rocks and pebbles, depending whether the tide is in or out. The rock over there in the distance, bottom left, is called Thatcher’s Rock and can be seen from many viewpoints in Torquay. I spent many of my summer days as a child here, with my mum and dad, messing about in the water with my brother or friends, and also just by myself. My husband and I married here too and it continues to be a draw to me whatever the season.
